The UAL Subcultures Interest Group (SIG) brings together researchers, students and graduates with an interest in youth subcultures related to music, fashion, style and politics. The group’s interests range from early be-bop jazz to glam rock, punk, post-punk, club cultures, acid house, black metal, skateboarding and contemporary global pop. This workshop will introduce a range of methodologies including subcultural theory, semiotics and discourse theory along with practical methods utilising photography, graphic design, journalism, sound arts, film, creative writing and illustration.
You will be asked to explore the history and style of a selected subcultural group or scene and to utilise your research skills to create a written and/or visual response. You will also be encouraged to visit relevant museums and archives in the course of your research.
