DESCRIPTION: The lab investigates the use of modular type as a mechanism for exploring 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional workflows. The students will learn to explore the construction of letterforms using an existing type system, developed and conceptualised by Umi Lovecraft (insider-outsider) and Celina Carlisle. Further, they will explore the translation of 2-d forms to 3-d moulds using laser cutting and have the opportunity to cast and fire these forms using clay. The final pieces will be assembled into a mural showcasing the word ‘OK’, with the ambition to be displayed at the final year showcase. Why ‘OK’? The word "OK" has a fascinating and debated etymology and it has since become one of the most widely recognised and used words globally.
